Nowadays and especially in the current economic climate, many people are now fitting part Worn tyres instead of New Tyres due to cost. We understand our customers needs, and sometimes money maybe tight, so putting that new tyre on your car can be a large expense. Some high performance cars using bigger tyres as standard (some 4X4 for example have 20 INCH tyres, the cost of a new tyre can be over €350 each!), fitting Part Worn Tyres can be a sensible alternative. so Discount Tyres have now decided to offer SAFE, LEGAL part worn tyres, tested and approved by our own technical team.
'Part worn' tyres are those which have been used previously - in other words they are 'second-hand' tyres. However, our part worn tyres have a minimum of 50% of their original tread depth (legal minimum is 2mm) and can still offer thousand's of kilometers more motoring in them. The essential attraction for many motorists is of course the price.

If you ask many people about Part Worn Tyres, most will associate them with dodgy looking 15 year old tyres, with hardly any tread, being sold from a backstreet garage, the side of a HOUSE or on a mobile van, by untrained chancers with no experience or insurance. These guys do exist unfortunatly. Our customers have asked us to sell them, because we are a trusted, experienced, trained and genuine family business. Which we saw as an Opportunity to sell our safe tyres, sourced and fitted professionally.
Safety should be everybody's priority. All of our part-worn tyres are inspected for age deterioration, splits or cuts, and we examine the remaining tread as well as checking the tyre pressure before fitting, and then again once the tyre is fitted to your vehicle.
We fully comply with the Motor Vehicle Tyres (Safety) Regulations.

Discount Tyres fully complies with The uK's Motor Vehicle Tyres (Safety) Regulations 1994 SI No. 3117 which came into force on 1 June 1995 and controls the supply of part-worn tyres.
Why Do We Need These Controls?
Safe tyres are a vital element in safe driving. Work carried out in the past by trading standards officers has shown that the sale of part-worn tyres can be a particular problem. A survey carried out by the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities revealed that one in three of the part-worn tyres purchased for the survey was found to be defective. Irish officials appear to do nothing.
What Happens If a Trader Supplies an Illegal Part-Worn Tyre?
In Ireland - Nothing!. But in the UK, It is a criminal offence to supply (which includes offering, agreeing, exposing or possessing for supply), a part-worn tyre which does not meet the requirements. Any trader breaching the controls is liable to prosecution. The maximum penalty on summary conviction is a fine of £5000 and/or six months imprisonment. In addition offending tyres are liable to seizure and forfeiture.
Part-worn tyres must not have any of the following defects:
* Any cuts bigger than 25mm or 10% of the section width of the tyre - measured on the outside and deep enough to reach the ply or cord.
* Any internal lump, bulge or tear caused by separation or partial separation of the structure.
* Any of the ply or cord exposed internally or externally.
* Any penetration damage which has not been repaired.
NOTE - The tyre must not exhibit any of the above defects when inflated to the highest pressure at which it is designed to operate.
Tread:
The grooves of the original tread pattern of the tyre must be of a depth of at least 2mm across the full breadth of tread and round the entire outer circumference of the tyre
Marking:

If the tyre has not been retreaded it must bear the relevant APPROVAL MARK, a speed category symbol and the load-capacity index
OR
*If the tyre has been retreaded it must bear the mark BS AU 144b, BS AU 144c, BS AU 144d, BS AU 144e.
Repair history:
Any repairs must have been properly carried out to the standard required by BS AU 159f: 1997. This requires all puncture repairs to be filled externally in addition to being patched internally.
